University of Gloucester - Deep Space

For the end of year degree show, I was assigned the responsibility of embellishing the space designated for the event. The chosen theme was Space, prompting me to contemplate how advertisements might appear during an era focused on interstellar exploration. Delving into this concept led me to envision the transformation of current-day corporations into futuristic entities existing light-years away. I carefully crafted promotional materials for these brands, infused with a touch of humour to ensure that our visitors were entertained throughout the showcase.

The initial concept featured a promotional advertisement by McDonald's showcasing a fish-themed kaiju. Given the current concerning trend of dwindling marine life, it forces us to confront the limited time we have to enjoy consuming fish as a species. This led me to ponder: as humanity expands its horizons into the vastness of space, will we be willing to embrace alternative extraterrestrial species as part of our diet? Alternatively, could we resort to genetic manipulation to create organisms tailored to thrive on new worlds and provide sustenance to a larger population compared to what was previously possible?

My second venture into creating future Maccas meal revolved around a similar concept as the first one, except this time featuring a pork-centric dish. Perhaps in a bid to cater to a burgeoning community of space traveler’s, I envisioned pigs that are genetically modified to be more substantial and resilient, capable of thriving in challenging extraterrestrial conditions.

We now transition to my 'Marlborough Intergalactic' collection. The idea for this collection stemmed from the immense tobacco industry, which has played a significant role in human society dating back to 5000–3000 BC. While the harmful effects of smoking are widely acknowledged, tobacco has undeniably influenced the development of our world. Individuals in lower-income professions often turn to tobacco consumption. When contemplating potential trade goods with extraterrestrial beings in the future, one may consider offering tobacco and sugar. These commodities have consistently ranked among the most sought-after products in human history, suggesting that they may accompany us as we venture into space colonization.

Here is my second iteration of the Marlborough intergalactic campaign. This creation was inspired by the alarming mortality rates associated with space exploration missions, prompting a deeper exploration of the challenges and dangers inherent in venturing beyond our planet's boundaries.

Following that, we present a powerful drunk driving advert where the perilous consequences of operating a vehicle while intoxicated are vividly portrayed. In this impactful depiction, the driver is navigating a spaceship, emphasizing the grave risks associated with driving under the influence.

This advert was created to ponder the future of pets as we explore the universe, if alien life was found, would we fight it for dominance of the stars? as a species we have become the dominant being on our own planet, turning apex predators such as wolves into subservient companions. In a study it was found that animals in Africa are more scared of a human voice than the roar of a Lion. if we were to expand our dominion beyond our own planet, would extraterrestrials become just as subservient?

this piece was created to parody the insurance company Legal and General. Perhaps one day, our interstellar vehicles will become just as insured as our automobiles. Today space rockets are already insured, and several insurance groups exist in service of insuring satellites and rocket launches. this inspired me to create a worst case scenario for a spaceship. a group of cyborg apes beset themselves upon the lone survivor of a crashed spaceship. A reference to my previous work university work. My dissertation ‘Monkey See, Monkey Sell. A deep dive into the use of primates in the advertising world’.

This advert was a simple gag, toilet roll is used in space, with a combination of gloves and wet wipes that are then stored in a vacuum sealed compartment. I also included a secret in the logo.

This advert was very on the nose, the history of milk consumption is rather disturbing if you ponder on it. Humans first learned to consume the milk of other mammals regularly following the domestication of animals during the Neolithic Revolution or the development of agriculture. whilst we only consume the dairy of a select few mammals, but as we explore the universe, who knows what other animals we will find to exploit.
